The question often arises as to whether adding a special hardener to wood oil is necessary. The OLI-NATURA HS Hardener is optional for many of our oils and is not required for every application. However, it offers decisive advantages for a fast and robust finish, especially on parquet floors or wooden washbasins. Adding it intensifies oxidative polymerization, accelerates curing and increases resistance. Read on to learn when and why using hardener is recommended.
Stronger bonds: Intensifying oxidative polymerization
Drying oils such as linseed oil and tung oil, which are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, cure as soon as they come into contact with oxygen in the air. Adding OLI-NATURA HS Hardener not only accelerates this oxidative polymerization process but also intensifies it. The result? A tighter molecular network that makes the treated surface considerably more resistant and durable. Figuratively speaking, this process resembles making a fabric: individual threads do not yet form a cloth, but weaving many threads together creates a mesh. If this fabric is woven more densely, it provides improved protection."

The OLI-NATURA HS Hardener also significantly accelerates pigment integration in colored oils such as the colored parquet oil OLI-NATURA HS Professional Oil or our two-component OLI-NATURA Colour Oil 2C. The colored oiled surfaces are not only more resistant but also completely colorfast against abrasion after 24 hours."
Fine sanding? No problem!
The final sanding is absolutely crucial when treating wooden surfaces with oil. If the wood is sanded too finely, it cannot absorb the oil optimally. Especially for surfaces sanded considerably finer than 180 or 240 grit - as is often the case with wood and epoxy resin tables - we recommend using our 2K method with OLI-NATURA HS Hardener. This ensures that even after very fine sanding, the oil can bond perfectly with the cellulose fibers of the wood and provide a durable finish.
No mandatory training required
The OLI-NATURA HS Hardener, an isocyanate-based product of the latest generation, is completely VOC-free and emission-free and exceeds the strictest EU limits. Although no mandatory training is required for its use, we still recommend that experienced applicators handle it in order to correctly observe specific technical aspects such as pot life.
Conclusion:
With the exception of OLI-NATURA Colour-Oil 2C, for which HS Hardener is mandatory, our oils can be used with or without hardener. These oils include OLI-NATURA Worktop-Oil, HS hardwax oil, HS Professional Oil, Scandic-Oil and Skogen-Oil. Not every application requires hardener, but especially for professional applications such as parquet floors or wooden washbasins with frequent water contact, where fast curing and a highly robust surface are desired, OLI-NATURA HS Hardener is recommended. The hardener accelerates the oxidative polymerization of the oil and significantly increases its resistance.
The »OLI-NATURA HS Hardener« is VOC-free, emission-free and requires no special training for use.
The VOC-free OLI-NATURA HS Hardener accelerates curing, improves resistance and is added to the oil in the specified mixing ratio.
Shake OLI-NATURA HS Hardener well shortly before use and mix it thoroughly with the oil in the specified ratio. Apply at room temperature.
Process the oil-hardener mixture according to the instructions. Use immediately and do not pour excess material back into the container. Pot life is 2-3 hours, depending on the oil type.
