What is the difference between Scandic-Oil CLASSIC and FOR FURNITURE?
Scandic-Oil CLASSIC is more fluid and designed for roller application on parquet and plank floors. It can also be used on furniture and stairs.
FOR FURNITURE is more viscous and specially optimized for furniture and stairs. It can be applied with a brush, foam roller or spray gun and provides better coverage on vertical surfaces. Due to its higher viscosity, it is not intended for parquet and plank floors. Use Scandic-Oil CLASSIC for these instead.
How much OLI NATURA® Scandic-Oil CLASSIC do I need for my area?
For complete treatment with Scandic-Oil CLASSIC, plan for coverage for two coats . One 5-liter container of OLI NATURA® Scandic-Oil CLASSIC covers the following areas:
- For two coats: approx. 30–42.5 m²
Note: All coverage figures are estimates. Actual coverage depends on the type of wood, final sanding, the wood's absorbency and the application method.
Which types of wood is Scandic-Oil CLASSIC suitable for?
Scandic-Oil CLASSIC is suitable for light-colored wood types such as oak, ash, birch, Douglas fir, spruce, silver fir and pine.
On dark or reddish woods, the white pigments may create a slight haze or alter the color appearance. Therefore, first apply a test patch to wood prepared in the same way and assess the result only after it has dried completely.
Are test samples available?
Yes, you can order test samples directly from the shop in the “Samples” category.
Prepare the test patch just as you would the final surface and apply the planned system in two coats. Assess the color, gloss and feel only after it has dried completely. The wood initially looks darker when wet; the raw wood effect appears after drying.
How is the raw wood effect achieved?
The water-based formula only slightly deepens the color of the wood. A small amount of white pigments further counteracts the remaining color deepening.
This largely preserves the natural color of light woods, giving them the look and feel of freshly sanded wood. Even on brushed and textured oak, the pores are barely highlighted in white.
The wood initially appears darker during application. The raw wood effect develops after drying.
Can I achieve a raw wood effect with Scandic-Oil on floors that have already been treated?
To achieve the raw wood effect, the floor must be untreated or sanded completely back to bare wood.
An existing oil treatment cannot be transformed into a raw wood look by applying another coat of Scandic-Oil. lacquers, waxes, and other old finishes must also be removed completely. After sanding, create a test area.
How many coats do I need, and how much oil should I allow for?
Apply Scandic-Oil CLASSIC twice, using approximately 60–80 ml/m² per coat. One liter covers approximately 13–17 m² for one coat or 6–8.5 m² for two coats. The actual coverage depends on the wood species, sanding, and absorbency.
If you want to apply a third coat, use OLI NATURA® Refresher as optional initial care. We do not recommend applying a third coat of Scandic-Oil: the additional pigment may make the surface appear whiter and compromise the desired raw wood effect.
Why does the wood feel rough after the first coat?
The water content can cause the wood fibers to rise. They are smoothed before the second coat.
Let the first coat dry for at least 2–3 hours. Smooth the dry surface with a Swedish red lacquer sanding pad, then vacuum thoroughly. You can find the full instructions in the “Application” tab.
How can I prevent white haze, streaks, and unwanted shine?
The key is an evenly prepared substrate, the recommended application quantity, and working quickly in manageable sections.
Apply Scandic-Oil CLASSIC to areas of about 5–10 m² using a short-pile oil/wax roller. Do not roll into areas that have already started to dry. Pooled material and additional coats of Scandic-Oil can result in a more whitish or layered surface.
For a more matte finish, the second coat can be carefully buffed with a white pad while still wet. Do not buff for too long or continue working on areas that have started to dry.
When can the floor be walked on and when is it fully cured?
The floor can be walked on carefully about 24 hours after the final application of Scandic-Oil. Scandic-Oil is fully cured without hardener after about 5–7 days, and with OLI NATURA® H2O-Hardener, after about 3–5 days.
The surface is dust-dry after about 1 hourand can be recoated after about 2–3 hours. Drying times depend on temperature, humidity, and the amount applied.
Being surface-dry or safe to walk on carefully does not mean the floor is ready for full use. The floor only reaches its full durability and resistance once fully cured. Until then, protect it from water and heavy use, and do not clean it with a damp cloth.
What should I do if Scandic-Oil takes longer than specified to dry or the surface remains sticky?
Do not apply any more oil or refresher for now, and allow the surface to dry further. Ensure good ventilation and follow the application conditions in the “Application” tab.
The cause may be applying too much oil, failing to wipe off excess, low temperatures, high humidity, or an unsuitable substrate.
If the surface remains sticky or soft despite suitable drying conditions, contact our technical support team before doing any further work. Photos and details about the wood species, pretreatment, amount applied, drying time, and room conditions are helpful.
When do I need OLI NATURA® H2O-Hardener?
OLI NATURA® H2O-Hardener must be added for commercial floors and surfaces subject to heavier use. Adding hardener is also recommended for faster use.
Shortly before use, thoroughly mix the oil and hardener in a ratio of 10:1 (oil : hardener) and apply immediately. The Pot life is 2–3 hours. Do not use the mixed material after that.
When can I apply an initial treatment with OLI NATURA® Refresher?
An optional initial treatment with OLI NATURA® Refresher is possible approx. 2–3 hours after the second Scandic-Oil application provided the surface is dry. You do not need to wait for it to cure completely.
Do not damp-clean the freshly oiled surface before applying Refresher.
How do I clean, care for, and repair the treated floor?
Use OLI NATURA® wood soap for cleaning, OLI NATURA® Refresher for refreshing and the originally used Scandic-Oil CLASSIC for local repairs.
Vacuum or sweep the floor regularly. Only after it has cured completely, clean with a barely damp mop and wood soap as needed; follow the recommended dosage.
If water repellency decreases or the floor looks dry and dull, refresh it with Refresher. First clean the surface and let it dry completely.
Small scratches and worn areas on a floor previously treated with Scandic-Oil CLASSIC can usually be sanded locally, thoroughly dusted, and treated again with the same product. See the “Care & Cleaning” tab for detailed instructions.
Does Scandic-Oil have an odor during application and drying?
Scandic-Oil has a mild odor but is not odorless. A temporary odor may occur during application and drying.
How noticeable it is varies from person to person. Ensure good ventilation and follow the recommended application amount.
Can cloths and pads soaked with Scandic-Oil spontaneously combust?
Cloths and pads soaked with OLI NATURA® Scandic-Oil CLASSIC are not prone to spontaneous combustion.
Follow the handling and disposal instructions on the label and in the safety data sheet.
