Here you will find helpful answers to frequently asked questions about cutting board oil:
1) What is the difference between initial treatment and first treatment?
Initial treatment, also known as first treatment, is carried out when a raw and untreated or completely sanded wooden board is treated for the first time. The boiled linseed oil is applied to the wood in 2-3 coats. Care treatment refers to refreshing an already treated wooden surface. The oil is used sparingly to refill the pores of the wood and give it a fresh appearance. Simply apply a little oil to a cloth or pad and wipe it evenly over the clean surface of the board.
2) Is boiled linseed oil suitable for cutting boards?
Yes, our boiled linseed oil is suitable for cutting boards and has been tested for food safety. It complies with Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 and can therefore be safely applied to wooden surfaces that come into contact with food.
3) Can I oil a board treated with olive oil using boiled linseed oil?
Many cooking oils, such as olive oil or mineral oils, are “non-drying” oils. They do not cure in the wood and can soften the wood fibers, which can later be difficult to correct. For this reason, we recommend not carrying out subsequent care treatment with OLI-NATURA boiled linseed oil.
4) Are oil-soaked cloths prone to spontaneous combustion?
Yes, linseed oil is a “drying oil” and reacts with oxygen in the air as it cures. This generates heat, which cannot escape from crumpled rags and can lead to heat buildup. Therefore, it is best to dampen oil-soaked cloths and let them dry spread out outdoors. They can then be disposed of safely. The boiled linseed oil itself, however, is not self-igniting.
5) How often should I re-oil the board?
The frequency of care intervals depends greatly on the level of use. If the wood is no longer smooth, appears brittle and dry, and no longer effectively repels water, it is time to re-treat the cutting board with oil.
6) How do I clean my cutting board properly?
Clean the wooden cutting board immediately after use to prevent residue from hardening.
- Wash the cutting board with water that is as hot as possible and clean it with a little dishwashing liquid.
- Then dry the board thoroughly and allow it to dry upright.
- Never put wooden cutting boards in the dishwasher.
- Wipe both sides with a damp cloth to prevent warping.
