What is the difference between OLI-NATURA Scandic-Oil »Classic« and »For Furniture«?

How is the raw wood effect achieved?

OLI-NATURA Scandic-Oil is a water-based emulsion based on natural oils that causes only slight darkening. A small amount of white pigment further reduces darkening and prevents the wood from yellowing prematurely. The wood pores are not colored white and do not stand out. This preserves the wood's original appearance, which creates the raw wood effect.

Does Scandic-Oil change the color of the wood?

The color may deepen during application, but this disappears as the surface dries.

Which types of wood is Scandic-Oil suitable for?

For light-colored woods such as oak, fir, ash, and spruce. On red oak, Scandic-Oil may produce a slight pink hue. On dark woods, the white pigments may cause a grayish haze.

How many coats are recommended, and what is the coverage of Scandic-Oil?

Two coats are recommended, with intermediate sanding before the second coat. Consumption is approximately 60–80 g/m² per coat, corresponding to about 12–15 m² per liter for one coat and 6–7 m² for two coats. Plan for a little more oil to make sure you have enough.

INFO: Coverage varies depending on the type of wood and its treatment. Fir is highly absorbent, while oak and ash have lower absorbency. The sanding and type of wood (end grain, solid wood, veneer) also affect absorbency, which is why only approximate values can be given.

What should be taken into account during application?

Follow the application instructions and prepare the surface carefully. Avoid applying too much or too little oil. For Scandic-Oil “For Furniture”, intermediate sanding should be done by hand, and excess oil should be removed immediately. Allow the oiled surface to cure sufficiently.

Why is intermediate sanding necessary?

Due to the water content in the oil, the wood swells during application. Intermediate sanding has a positive effect on the surface result by cutting off the raised wood fibers after the wood has dried back.

How long does Scandic-Oil take to dry?

Dust-dry after approximately 1 hour; fully cured after about 5 days. Drying time depends on temperature, humidity, and coat thickness.

Is the product subject to mandatory labeling?

The product is not subject to mandatory labeling and is not classified as dangerous goods.

Does Scandic-Oil contain oximes and cobalt?

No, Scandic-Oil contains no cobalt-containing compounds or oximes. Once dry, the coating is harmless to humans, animals, and plants and complies with DIN EN 71-3 (safety of toys) and DIN 53160 (resistant to saliva and perspiration). It is approved by the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt) as a construction product and meets the highest Giscode classification, Ö10+. Scandic-Oil is also listed in Baubook as an ecological construction product.

Is Scandic-Oil food-safe?

Yes, Scandic-Oil is suitable for surfaces that come into contact with food. It meets the requirements of the German Food and Feed Code (LFGB) for resistance to saliva and perspiration (standards DIN 53160-1 and -2) and complies with DIN EN 71-3 (safety of toys) after fully curing.

Does Scandic-Oil have a strong smell?

Scandic-Oil has a mild odor. The odor that may occur during oxidation and depends on the type of wood and the surface is harmless and disappears after full curing.

Is there a risk of spontaneous combustion with Scandic-Oil?

No, Scandic-Oil is an oxidatively drying, water-based oil. Therefore, there is no risk of spontaneous combustion from oil-soaked rags, pads, or cloths.

How do you care for a surface treated with Scandic-Oil?

Remove dust deposits with a dry or slightly damp, but never wet, cloth. Parquet floors should be vacuumed or swept daily. Adhering dirt can be gently removed with concentrated »OLI-NATURA wood soap«. For initial care and refreshing oiled wood, we recommend »OLI-NATURA Refresher«. Signs that care is needed include reduced water resistance and a dry, brittle surface.

Does Scandic-Oil contain solvents?

Scandic-Oil is VOC-free and contains no volatile organic compounds. The natural oils are dissolved in water, which serves as the carrier and thus functions as the “solvent.”

How do I clean the tools, such as brushes, etc.?

The brushes and tools can simply be cleaned with water.

How long does Scandic-Oil last?

Scandic-Oil has a shelf life of 24 months in its sealed original container. Opened containers should be used up promptly, resealed airtight immediately, and protected from sunlight. The storage temperature should not fall below +5 °C.
