TEAK OIL & DECKING OIL FOR OUTDOOR WOOD

Sun and rain change wood. Even weather-resistant woods such as teak fade and turn gray over time. Regular oiling with OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil counteracts the silvery-gray patina and helps protect the wood surface from drying out and becoming brittle.

The oil penetrates deep into the wood and protects it from within. The surface remains open-pore and water-repellent, while the color and grain are visibly refreshed - without a closed film layer.

Which types of wood and applications is OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil suitable for?

For wood terraces, decking boards, garden furniture, pool surrounds and yacht decks made of suitable outdoor woods such as teak, bangkirai, Douglas fir, larch, eucalyptus, black locust, oak, Ipé or cumaru.

The right choice when you want to preserve and visibly emphasize the warm character of the wood and are looking for a biocide-free wood oil for outdoor use.

A particular advantage is the easy maintenance: The oil penetrates the wood and remains open-pore. The oil coating does not crack, peel or flake. Previously oiled surfaces can therefore usually be recoated easily without sanding.

What does wood look like after applying OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil?

Oiling gives the wood greater depth and warmth. The color and grain appear more vivid, while the surface remains open-pore and natural to the touch.

Natural contains no pigments, but it is not visually colorless: Like any color-enhancing oil, it deepens the existing wood tone. Teak is lightly pigmented, subtly enhances warm wood tones and provides increased UV protection. The Teak color is also suitable for other types of wood without covering them in a teak tone.

The type of wood, its natural color and sanding affect the color tone. A sample area on the original wood provides the most reliable indication. All color tones are available as samplers.

How easy is OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil to apply?

Apply thinly, allow to penetrate, remove excess. Apply the oil evenly in the direction of the grain and polish completely after about 15 minutes.

Apply only to clean, dry wood. Then protect the freshly oiled surface from rain and moisture for 5–8 days.

Very dry or highly absorbent wood can be oiled a second time after drying overnight. Treat dense woods such as teak only thinly. One coat is usually sufficient for refreshing the surface.

Previously oiled surfaces can generally be maintained without sanding. Depending on weather and use, refreshing once a year is usually sufficient; for fully exposed wood, twice a year if needed.

What can you rely on with OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil?

Proven over many years. We have been manufacturing OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil with virtually no changes for over 20 years. We deliberately formulate it without biocides or preservatives. This makes the wood oil suitable not only for outdoor use, but also for suitable wood surfaces indoors.

Preparation tips

  • Apply the oil at 15–25 °C. Outdoors, do not apply the oil in direct sunlight, extreme heat, damp weather, or when rain is likely.
  • The surface must be clean, dry, and free of grease. In case of heavy soiling, we recommend cleaning with OLI-NATURA Exterior Cleaner. Once completely dry, rough areas or raised fibers can be smoothed with fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit) if necessary.
  • Use a protective covering, such as cardboard or plastic sheeting, to protect floor coverings from oil stains.

Application

  • Stirring the oil: Shake or stir the container thoroughly before use.
  • Application: Apply the oil thinly and evenly in the direction of the grain using a brush, flat brush, or roller. Reapply oil to dry areas if necessary.
  • Removing excess: After 15–30 minutes, remove excess oil with a cotton cloth, oil-absorbing cloth, or white polishing pad, and polish the surface. The surface should then feel dry to the touch.
  • For very dry wood, a second coat can be applied after drying overnight - in the same way as the first coat.

During drying

Protect the wood from moisture and water and do not clean it with a damp cloth.

Coverage

1–2 coats

Depending on the absorbency of the wood, approx. 40–80 g/m² per coat (equivalent to 12–25 m²/l).

Drying

  • Dust-dry after 1–2 hours
  • Fully cured after approx. 5 days (depending on temperature and humidity)
  • During this time, do not clean with a damp cloth, handle gently, and protect from water.

Tool cleaning

Clean tools immediately after use with OLI-NATURA brush cleaner or a suitable oil thinner.

Notes

  • Coverage varies depending on the wood species and absorbency of the substrate.
  • Do not apply the oil in damp weather, strong sunlight, or extreme heat .
  • Rags, pads, or sponges soaked with oil can spontaneously ignite due to heat buildup! Therefore, store them under water or dampen them after use and allow them to dry spread out outdoors before disposal.

How much OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil do I need for my surface?

Depending on the container size, OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil covers the following areas:

For one coat:

  • 250 ml: approx. 3–6 m²
  • 1 liter: approx. 12–25 m²
  • 2.5 liters: approx. 30–62.5 m²

For two coats:

  • 250 ml: approx. 1.5–3 m²
  • 1 liter: approx. 6–12.5 m²
  • 2.5 liters: approx. 15–31 m²

The figures apply to the Natural and Teak variants.

Note: All coverage figures are estimates. Actual coverage depends on the type of wood, final sanding, the wood’s absorbency, and the application method.

Which types of wood and surfaces is OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil suitable for?

This exterior oil is suitable for untreated, oiled, or freshly sanded outdoor wood, especially teak, Bangkirai, eucalyptus, black locust, and other hardwoods, as well as pressure-treated softwood. Typical applications include decks, garden furniture, pool surrounds, and wooden surfaces on boats.

Does the oil permanently prevent graying?

No. OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil delays drying out and graying, but cannot permanently prevent natural weathering. How long the protection lasts depends on the type of wood, construction, UV exposure, weather, and use.

How often does oiled outdoor wood need maintenance?

Inspect the surface at least once a year and refresh it once or twice a year, depending on wear. Re-oiling is recommended as soon as the color fades, water soaks in quickly, or the wood looks dry and rough.

Why does treated wood still turn gray or black?

Possible causes include UV radiation, standing water, dirt, algae, fungi, or maintenance intervals that are too long. Poor ventilation and inadequate drainage can also cause discoloration. Thoroughly clean affected surfaces before re-oiling and let them dry completely.

Does the oil protect against mold and mildew stains?

The oil is biocide-free and does not protect against algae or fungi. Infestation can therefore occur on surfaces that remain damp, dirty, or poorly ventilated. Water must be able to drain away freely, and the wood must be able to dry quickly after rain.

Is OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil waterproof?

No. The oil makes the wood water-repellent but does not create a waterproof seal. Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture, standing water, and use below the waterline.

How should the wood be pre-treated?

The wood must be clean, dry, grease-free, and absorbent. Completely remove any old film-forming coatings. Sand the wood properly and evenly, then remove all dust thoroughly. Clean dirty or grayed surfaces beforehand and allow them to dry completely.

Does new wood also need to be cleaned before oiling?

New wood can also become dirty during storage, transport, or processing. Remove dust, grease, and other residues, and allow the surface to dry completely. For very smooth or planed wood, first check whether it absorbs the oil evenly.

Can I use OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil on lacquered wood?

No. Old paint and lacquer coatings must be completely removed so the oil can penetrate the wood. Thoroughly clean old open-pore oil finishes and allow them to dry completely.

Can I oil grayed wood or wood with green growth directly?

No. Before oiling, remove graying, algae, moss, and other deposits with a suitable outdoor cleaner. Rinse with clean water, allow the wood to dry completely, and lightly smooth any raised wood fibers if needed.

At what temperatures and in what weather conditions should I apply the oil?

Apply at 15 to 25 °C in dry weather. Do not oil in direct sunlight, extreme heat, high humidity, or when rain is likely. Nighttime dew can also affect drying.

How do I apply OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil correctly?

Shake or stir the container thoroughly. Apply a thin, even coat of oil along the grain using a brush, deck brush, or roller. After 15 to 30 minutes, remove all excess with a cotton cloth, oil-absorbing cloth, or white pad, and buff the surface. It should feel dry to the touch, not oily.

Why should end grain be treated especially carefully?

End grain, or the ends of the boards, absorbs a lot of moisture. Oil these areas carefully and evenly, without leaving excess product behind. At the same time, make sure water can drain away and the wood can dry again.

Are multiple coats always better?

No. The number of coats depends on the absorbency of the wood. Dense hardwoods like teak usually need only one very thin coat. Severely dried-out or absorbent wood may need a second thin coat after drying overnight.

Why does the surface remain sticky or oily?

Common causes include applying too much, failing to remove excess, a substrate with low absorbency, or residual moisture in the wood. Low temperatures, high humidity, and insufficient air circulation also slow drying.

What can I do if the surface is already sticky?

Wipe off fresh excess with a clean, absorbent cloth and buff the surface dry. Allow oil that has already started to cure to continue curing in a warm, dry, well-ventilated area. If the surface remains sticky, contact OLI-NATURA Customer Service before applying another coat.

How long does OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil take to dry?

Under suitable conditions, the surface is dust-dry after about one to two hours and fully cured after approximately five days. Low temperatures, high humidity, limited air circulation, or a coat that is too thick will extend drying time.

When can freshly oiled wood get wet again?

Protect freshly oiled wood from rain, water, and damp cleaning for five to eight days. If the surface gets wet too soon, staining, washout, or drying problems may occur.

Why does the color look different on my wood than expected?

The color may look different depending on the type of wood, its natural color, grain, and sanding. Images and on-screen representations are for guidance only. If in doubt, test on the actual wood first. Convenient 20 ml samplers are available for this purpose.

Is the Natural shade really colorless?

Natural contains no pigment, but it is not optically invisible. Like any color-enhancing oil, it deepens the existing wood tone and makes the color and grain appear more pronounced. If in doubt, test on the actual wood first using a 20 ml sampler.

How much color does the Teak shade add?

Teak is lightly pigmented and enhances warm wood tones without changing the wood to an opaque color. On light-colored or highly absorbent woods, the color may appear more intense or reddish. If in doubt, test on the actual wood first using a 20 ml sampler.

Why are there deposits or pigment particles in the container?

Color pigments may settle at the bottom of the container during storage. Stir the oil thoroughly before and during application. If solid particles cannot be mixed in evenly, do not use the product and contact customer service.

How much coverage does OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil provide?

Depending on the type of wood and its absorbency, consumption is approximately 40 to 80 g/m² or 12 to 25 m² per liter per coat. Rough, very dry, or particularly absorbent wood requires more product.

Can I use the oil on bamboo or WPC?

OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil is designed for absorbent wood. Bamboo, WPC, and modified materials can absorb oil very differently or not at all. Therefore, follow the material manufacturer’s instructions and, if in doubt, test the product on a small area first. On non-absorbent surfaces, the oil may remain sticky.

Is OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil also suitable for indoor furniture?

The oil can be used on suitable indoor wood surfaces, but it is specifically designed for exterior wood. For dining tables, countertops, and other indoor furniture, we recommend an interior oil formulated for that purpose.

Does OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil contain biocides?

No. The oil is biocide-free and contains no chemical film protection against algae or fungi. The Teak variant provides enhanced UV protection through its pigmentation.

Can oil-soaked cloths and pads spontaneously combust?

Yes. OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil contains drying oils that cure by absorbing oxygen from the air. This generates heat. On the wood surface, the heat can dissipate; in crumpled cloths, pads, or sponges, however, it can build up and cause spontaneous combustion. The product itself is not self-igniting.

Never leave oil-soaked materials crumpled up. After use, store them under water or lay them flat, individually, in a safe place to dry completely. Then dispose of them in accordance with local regulations. Never put oil-soaked materials in a clothes dryer.

Care tips

Refresh once or twice a year

Depending on weather exposure and condition, treat oiled garden furniture and terraces once or twice a year with OLI-NATURA Yacht & Teak Oil. This helps prevent drying out and graying and enhances the natural wood color. Re-oiling alone will not restore the original color of wood that has already grayed.

Clean and allow to dry

Remove loose dirt with a soft brush. For heavier soiling, use OLI-NATURA Outdoor Cleaner following the application instructions. Clean in the direction of the grain, rinse thoroughly with clean water, and allow the wood to dry completely.

Sanding is usually not necessary. Only smooth rough areas or raised wood fibers after drying with fine sandpaper, then remove the sanding dust.

Apply a thin coat of oil

The wood must be clean and dry. Ideally, temperatures should be 15–25 °C; the wood and oil should also be at a suitable temperature. Avoid strong, direct sunlight.

Stir the oil thoroughly and apply a thin coat in the direction of the grain. After about 15 minutes, completely wipe off any oil that has not absorbed using a lint-free cloth. Do not leave any glossy residue.

Allow to dry under cover

Choose a spell of consistently warm, dry weather. Protect the freshly oiled surface from rain, dew, and splashing water while it dries. Cold temperatures and high humidity extend the drying time. Follow the instructions on the container.

Important: Oil-soaked cloths can spontaneously combust. Follow the safety instructions on the container.

Labelling

OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil is not subject to labelling requirements and is not classified as hazardous under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP). It is neither subject to mandatory labelling nor classified as dangerous goods.

Safety instructions

⚠ Cloths, rags and polishing pads soaked with oil may self-ignite due to heat accumulation. Clean them immediately after use or immerse them completely in water, or store them airtight in a metal container.
