What is the difference between Scandic-Oil CLASSIC and FOR FURNITURE?
Scandic-Oil CLASSIC is thinner and designed for roller application on parquet and plank floors. It can also be used on furniture and stairs.
FOR FURNITURE is more viscous and specially optimized for furniture and stairs. It can be applied in two coats with a brush, foam roller, or spray gun, and provides better coverage on vertical surfaces. Due to its higher viscosity, it is not intended for parquet and plank floors. Use Scandic-Oil CLASSIC for these instead.
How much OLI NATURA® Scandic-Oil FOR FURNITURE do I need for my area?
For full treatment with Scandic-Oil FOR FURNITURE, plan for the coverage for two coats . Depending on the container size, OLI NATURA® Scandic-Oil FOR FURNITURE covers the following areas:
For two coats:
- 1 liter: approx. 8–12.5 m²
- 2.5 liters: approx. 20–31 m²
Note: All coverage figures are approximate. Actual coverage depends on the type of wood, final sanding, the wood's absorbency, and the application method.
Which types of wood is Scandic-Oil FOR FURNITURE suitable for?
Scandic-Oil FOR FURNITURE is particularly suitable for light-colored wood types such as oak, ash, spruce, and fir.
On dark or reddish woods, the white pigments may create a slight haze or alter the color appearance. Therefore, first test the product on a sample area of similarly prepared wood, and assess the result only after it has dried completely.
Are test samples available?
Yes, you can order test samples directly from the shop in the “Samples” category.
Prepare the sample area just as you would the final surface, and apply the intended system in two coats. Assess the color, gloss, and feel only after it has dried completely. The wood initially appears darker when wet; the raw wood effect develops after drying.
How does the raw wood effect develop?
The water-based formula darkens the wood only slightly. A small amount of white pigments further counteracts the remaining color deepening.
This allows light-colored woods to largely retain their natural color, resembling freshly sanded wood in appearance and feel. Even on brushed and textured oak, the pores are barely accentuated in white.
During application, the wood initially appears darker. The raw wood effect develops after drying.
Can I achieve a raw wood effect on previously treated furniture with Scandic-Oil?
To achieve the raw wood effect, the wood must be untreated or sanded back completely to bare wood.
An existing oil treatment cannot be transformed into a raw wood look by applying another coat of Scandic-Oil. lacquers, waxes and other old finishes must also be removed completely. After sanding, test the finish on a sample area.
How many coats do I need, and how much oil should I allow for?
Apply Scandic-Oil FOR FURNITURE twice, using approx. 40–60 ml/m² per coat. One liter covers approximately 17–25 m² with one coat or 8–12.5 m² with two coats. The actual coverage depends on the type of wood, sanding and absorbency.
If you want to apply a third coat, use OLI NATURA® Refresher as optional initial care. We do not recommend a third coat of Scandic-Oil: the additional pigment may make the surface look whiter and impair the desired raw wood effect.
Why does the wood feel rough after the first coat?
The water content can cause the wood fibers to rise. These are smoothed before the second coat.
Let the first coat dry for approx. 2 hours. Smooth raised fibers on the dry surface by hand with P220, using light pressure and sanding with the grain. Do not sand through the first coat, and remove the sanding dust thoroughly. You can find the full instructions in the “Application” tab.
How can I avoid white haze, streaks and unwanted shine?
Work evenly and quickly in manageable sections. Stir or shake the oil thoroughly before and during application, and follow the recommended application rate.
When applying with a brush or roller, work the second coat evenly into the surface with a white pad while it is still wet, and remove all excess material. Only work on sections small enough to finish before the product starts to dry.
Material buildup and additional Scandic-Oil coats can cause whitish or layered areas. Do not polish for too long or continue working on surfaces that have started to dry. Assess the final gloss level only after the surface is completely dry.
When can the surface be used, and when is it fully cured?
Scandic-Oil FOR FURNITURE is fully cured after approx. 5–7 days without hardener, and after approx. 3–5 days with OLI NATURA® H2O-Hardener. With hardener, the surface can withstand light use after approx. 24–48 hours.
The surface is dust-dry after approx. 1 hour, and can be recoated after approx. 2 hours. Drying times depend on temperature, humidity, and the amount applied.
Surface-dry does not mean fully ready for use. The surface reaches its full load-bearing capacity and resistance only after it has fully cured. Until then, protect it from water and heavy use, and do not clean it with a damp cloth.
What should I do if Scandic-Oil takes longer than stated to dry or the surface remains sticky?
First, do not apply any more oil or Refresher, and allow the surface to dry further. Ensure good ventilation and follow the application conditions in the “Application” tab.
The cause may be applying too much oil, failing to remove excess oil, low temperatures, high humidity, or an unsuitable substrate.
If the surface remains sticky or soft despite suitable drying conditions, contact our technical support before reworking it. Photos and details about the wood species, prior treatment, amount applied, drying time, and room conditions are helpful.
When do I need OLI NATURA® H2O-Hardener?
Add OLI NATURA® H2O-Hardener when treating tabletops and surfaces that are likely to be exposed to grease. Adding hardener is recommended for stair treads. It increases resistance and shortens the curing time.
Shortly before use, mix the oil and hardener thoroughly at a ratio of 10:1 (oil : hardener) and apply immediately. The pot life is 2–3 hours. Do not use the mixed material after that time or return it to the original container.
How do I protect treated tabletops from water and grease stains?
Apply Scandic-Oil FOR FURNITURE to tabletops with OLI NATURA® H2O-Hardener and allow the surface to cure completely.
Wipe up spilled liquids and grease promptly and avoid standing moisture. Place hot objects on suitable coasters. A surface treated with hardener also requires gentle cleaning and care as needed.
If unusual stains develop quickly despite full curing and correct application, our application experts can help assess the cause.
When can I apply an initial treatment with OLI NATURA® Refresher?
An optional initial treatment with OLI NATURA® Refresher is possible about 2–3 hours after the second Scandic-Oil application provided the surface is dry. You do not need to wait for it to cure fully.
Do not damp-clean the freshly oiled surface before applying Refresher. Apply Refresher undiluted in a thin coat, spread evenly, and remove all excess.
How do I clean, care for, and repair treated furniture and stairs?
Use OLI NATURA® wood soap for cleaning, OLI NATURA® Refresher for refreshing and the originally used Scandic-Oil FOR FURNITURE for localized repairs.
Dust furniture dry; vacuum or sweep stairs. Only after fully cured, clean as needed with a damp, not wet, cloth using wood soap. Follow the recommended dosage and avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners.
If water repellency diminishes or the wood looks dry and dull, refresh it with Refresher. Clean the surface first and allow it to dry completely.
Small scratches and worn areas can usually be sanded locally, thoroughly dusted, and treated with the same product. Find detailed instructions in the “Care & Cleaning” tab.
Does Scandic-Oil smell during application and drying?
Scandic-Oil has a mild odor, but is not odorless. A temporary odor may occur during application and drying.
How noticeable it is varies from person to person. Ensure good ventilation and follow the recommended application amount.
Can cloths and pads soaked with Scandic-Oil spontaneously combust?
Cloths and pads soaked with OLI NATURA® Scandic-Oil FOR FURNITURE are not prone to spontaneous combustion.
Follow the handling and disposal instructions on the label and in the safety data sheet.
