OLI NATURA® Colour HS Professional Oil - Color and protection. With one coat.

Parquet, wooden floorboards, stairs, tables, or other furniture: OLI NATURA® Colour HS Professional Oil colors and protects interior wood with just one coat. This high-solids color oil tints the wood transparently while keeping the grain visible. Depending on the type of wood, sanding, and absorbency, one liter covers approximately 25-50 m².

Up to 60 minutes of open time give you room to work the oil in carefully and make it easier to achieve an even, seamless result, even on large surfaces. The oil can be applied directly without hardener. OLI NATURA® Hardener improves pigment binding, accelerates curing, and increases resistance. A ratio of 10 parts oil to 1 part hardener is sufficient.

Which types of wood and applications is OLI NATURA® Colour HS Professional Oil suitable for?

For untreated or freshly sanded wood surfaces and absorbent wood-based materials indoors. Slip resistance is also important on wooden floors and stairs: R10/R11 tested on sanded oak - without and with hardener. The achieved class depends on the specific tested system.

Proven on roller coating machines: Used for many years for factory-applied oil treatment of parquet and absorbent wood-based materials.

Which color suits your wood?

Twelve transparent colors - from subtle to distinctive. Warm brown and natural tones give the wood a welcoming look. Chocolate Brown adds darker depth, Terra Brown an earthy warmth. Beige Grey combines warm wood nuances with a subtle gray tint. Light Ivory adds a light, warm accent for Scandinavian-inspired floors and furniture. You can mix all twelve colors with one another to create individual shades.

Try it first, then decide: Use the sample set to test your preferred color on the original wood. The type of wood, its natural color, and the sanding affect the result. Assess the color effect after complete drying.

How easy is OLI NATURA® Colour HS Professional Oil to apply?

Apply thinly. Work in. Polish. The long open time gives you room to work the oil in carefully and evenly, even across larger floor sections - for a seamless result with less time pressure. You can work by hand or machine, with or without OLI NATURA® Hardener - according to the surface and its level of wear.

How to apply Colour HS Professional Oil: stain and oil furniture, worktops, stairs and floors

Preparation: The wood must be clean, dry and absorbent. Remove old film-forming coatings. Do not sand floors and stairs finer than P100–120, or furniture and worktops finer than P180. Sand evenly and remove dust thoroughly. If required, pre-treat with diluted OLI NATURA® PreOilCleaner Allow to dry completely before oiling, smooth raised wood fibres if necessary, and remove dust again. Do not use PreOilCleaner before OLI NATURA® Antique.

Tip: Apply a test coat to similarly prepared wood and assess the colour effect after drying. The type of wood, its natural colour and sanding affect the colour shade.

Optional with hardener: Mix 10 parts oil with 1 part OLI NATURA® Hardener thoroughly and use immediately. The hardener improves pigment binding and accelerates curing. Pot life for coloured variants: approx. 1–2 hours. Only mix the amount required.

Furniture, stairs and worktops: Stir the oil thoroughly before and during application to keep the pigments evenly distributed. Apply thinly and evenly and work in with a beige pad. Allow to penetrate for approx. 30–60 minutes. Re-oil areas that absorb quickly if necessary. Remove excess and polish with a white pad until the surface feels dry to the touch.

Floors: Work in sections of 10–15 m². Apply the oil thinly and evenly with a short-pile roller or a squeegee and work it in with a beige pad within 30–60 minutes. Re-oil areas that absorb quickly if necessary. Remove excess and polish with a white pad until the surface feels dry to the touch. Do not leave any excess oil on the surface.

Coverage: One coat; approx. 20–40 ml/m² (25–50 m²/l), depending on the type of wood, sanding and absorbency.

Drying: Dust-dry after approx. 1–2 hours, carefully walkable after approx. 24 hours and fully cured after approx. 5–7 days. With hardener, the surface cures faster. Protect from water and heavy use until fully cured and do not clean with a damp cloth.

Application conditions: The material, wood and surrounding area must be between +15 and +25 °C during application. Ensure adequate ventilation during application and drying.

Safety – Risk of spontaneous combustion: After use, completely soak oil-soaked cloths and pads with water, then spread them out to dry outdoors. Avoid heat accumulation.

How much OLI NATURA® Colour HS Professional Oil do I need for my surface?

Depending on the container size, OLI NATURA® Colour HS Professional Oil covers the following areas with one coat :

  • 250 ml: approx. 6–12.5 m²
  • 1 liter: approx. 25–50 m²
  • 2.5 liters: approx. 62.5–125 m²

These figures apply to all colors.

Note: All coverage figures are estimates. Actual coverage depends on the type of wood, final sanding, the wood’s absorbency, and the application method.

Does the color look the same on all types of wood?

No. The effect of a color oil depends largely on the wood’s natural base tone and the sanding. The same color can look different on oak than on light pine or spruce. The coarser the sanding, the more intense the color effect can be. Therefore, test the color on the original wood with the intended sanding first.

Why don’t you offer a color fan for HS Professional Oil COLOUR?

A color fan shows how a color looks on the wood used for the fan - it may look different on your wood. This is because the type of wood, its natural color, and the sanding affect the result. That’s why we offer samplers: you can test the color directly on your wood with the intended sanding.

Which color gives the lightest possible wood appearance?

Light Ivory comes closest among the HS Professional Oil COLOUR colors to a light, minimally enhanced appearance. For a more pronounced raw wood effect, OLI NATURA® Scandic-Oil CLASSIC or hardwax oil Cotton White are suitable. Test the color effect on the original wood first.

Does pigmented oil protect against darkening?

The pigments can slow down light-induced color changes in the wood. They cannot completely prevent the natural darkening process.

Can I mix different colors?

Yes. The colors of HS Professional Oil COLOUR can be mixed with one another. Mixing it with the pigment-free HS Professional Oil NATUR from the same product range will tone down the color effect. Mix enough material for the entire surface and test the result on the original wood first.

Can I apply HS Professional Oil COLOUR to lacquered or previously oiled wood?

Film-forming old coatings must be completely removed so the oil can penetrate the wood. Check previously oiled surfaces for compatibility and adequate absorbency. If necessary, sand down to bare wood.

How do I prepare the wood?

The surface must be dry, clean, evenly sanded, and thoroughly dust-free. For furniture, OLI NATURA® recommends a final sanding grit of no more than P180; for stairs and floors, P120. Pigments can clearly highlight sanding imperfections.

Do I need to stir the oil before and during application?

Yes. Pigments can settle. Stir or shake the oil thoroughly before use and stir it again during prolonged application. Mix the contents of containers from different batches beforehand to avoid color differences.

Is one coat of HS Professional Oil COLOUR enough?

Yes. When applied correctly, one coat is enough for the initial treatment. The key is to saturate the wood evenly and completely buff off the excess oil. If needed, the surface can be buffed again the next day with a little oil and a white pad.

How do I remove excess oil without removing the color?

Work the oil evenly into the wood. Then buff off the excess with a white pad until the surface looks even and feels dry to the touch. Remove larger amounts of oil first.

What should I do if I have applied considerably too much oil and it is still wet?

If a lot of oil remains on the surface after the penetration time, scrape off the excess with a sharp pass of a foam rubber squeegee before buffing. Then buff with a white pad until no excess oil is visible and the surface feels dry to the touch.

How do I remove excess oil that has already dried?

Carefully work on the excess oil with a green, mildly abrasive pad and thoroughly remove the loosened residue. If the oil has already fully cured, sanding may be necessary. Then check the color effect. If another treatment is needed, apply a thin coat of HS Professional Oil COLOUR in the original color and buff it off completely. Test the procedure beforehand in an inconspicuous area.

What should I keep in mind when handling oil-soaked cloths and pads?

They can spontaneously combust due to heat buildup. After use, soak them thoroughly in water and then leave them spread out to dry outdoors. Avoid heat buildup.

Can I use HS Professional Oil with hardener?

Yes. 10 parts oil to 1 part OLI NATURA® Hardener Mix thoroughly and use immediately. The hardener accelerates curing and increases durability; with COLOUR, it also improves pigment binding. The pot life for colored variants is about 2 hours.

When can I walk on an oiled floor again?

Without hardener, the surface can be walked on carefully after about 24 hours and is fully cured after about 5–7 days. With hardener, it cures faster. Protect the surface from water and heavy use until it is fully cured.

When can I clean the surface with a damp cloth?

Only after it has fully cured. After that, you can clean the surface with OLI NATURA® wood soap using a well-wrung cloth as needed.

Why does the oiled surface look blotchy or streaky?

Possible causes include uneven sanding, differences in the wood's absorbency, pigments that have not been stirred sufficiently, or excess oil left on the surface. Ensure the surface is sanded evenly, stir the oil thoroughly, and polish the surface carefully.

Can I even out a blotchy oiled surface afterward?

As long as excess oil remains on the surface, careful polishing may help. After curing, the correction depends on the cause. If the color has penetrated the wood unevenly, sanding the surface evenly again may be necessary. Test the procedure on an inconspicuous area first.

How do I care for a colored oiled surface?

OLI NATURA® wood soap is suitable for regular cleaning. OLI NATURA® Wood Refresher can be used to refresh the surface without changing its color. To refresh the color as well, use the color originally applied.

When should the surface be refreshed?

When the protective effect wears off, rather than according to a fixed schedule. Clean the surface first and let it dry completely. Choose how to refresh it based on whether you want to maintain only the oil protection or add color as well.

Can I refresh a color-oiled surface with the same shade?

Yes. Clean the surface and let it dry completely. Use the shade originally applied with HS Professional Oil COLOUR. To make a more fluid, pigmented maintenance oil, you can mix two parts OLI NATURA® Oil Thinner with one part colored HS Professional Oil. Apply the mixture thinly and remove all excess. Test the color effect on an inconspicuous spot first.

Can I re-oil only worn areas with color?

Yes, localized touch-ups are possible. Clean the area and use the shade originally applied. If the area has been sanded, the freshly sanded wood may absorb more pigment and initially look different from the surrounding area. Test the touch-up first. If a noticeable color difference remains, you may need to treat the entire continuous surface.

Do I need to sand before re-oiling?

Not necessarily. When refreshing an intact, oiled surface, thorough cleaning is the first priority. Sanding may be necessary if there is damage, staining, or troublesome residue from care products. The condition of the surface is what matters.

Can I apply a different, darker shade to a color-oiled surface?

This is only possible to a limited extent. Wood that has already been oiled absorbs less oil and pigment. The new shade will combine with the existing color and may turn out unevenly. Test the result on the existing surface. For a targeted, even color change, sand down to bare wood and apply oil again.

Can I lighten a dark-oiled surface with a lighter color oil?

Generally, not by simply applying another coat of oil. The dark shade will remain visible; light pigments may appear blotchy. To achieve a lighter shade, sand off the existing treatment down to bare wood. Then prepare a test area.

Oiled wood surfaces retain their natural charm through regular cleaning and care. Dust and light dirt can be removed with a dry or slightly damp cloth - never wipe wet! Parquet should ideally be vacuumed or swept daily, as sand can cause fine scratches.

OLI-NATURA wood soap cleans gently without damaging the wood. For refreshing the surface, OLI-NATURA wood maintenance oil or - for light shades - the OLI-NATURA Refresher are suitable. Alternatively, the colored HS Professional Oil can be used as a pigmented maintenance oil mixed in a 1:2 ratio with OLI-NATURA oil thinner.

Care intervals depend on use and wear. If the surface becomes dull or repels water less effectively, it is time for re-oiling

The product is not subject to labeling requirements. The mixture is not classified as hazardous within the meaning of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008. It does not need to be labeled with GHS hazard pictograms or signal words and is not classified as dangerous goods. 

Safety instructions

Oil-soaked cloths/pads can spontaneously ignite due to heat buildup! Therefore, clean them immediately after use or store them under water. Keep out of reach of children.
