The word spring fills many people with anticipation! Now it is time to get garden furniture & co. ready for the outdoor season. However, the weather determines when it is best to oil outdoor wood outdoors.
Ah, everything is slowly turning green, the birds are chirping and the sun is sending warm temperatures our way. That is how we imagine spring! However, oiling outdoor wood is not tied to a specific date - the actual weather conditions are what matter.
What weather is suitable for oiling outdoor wood?
Generally, the period from April to October is considered suitable. However, you should not adhere too rigidly to this rule of thumb. Rather, temperatures above 10°C and dry days are the perfect weather for getting garden furniture & co. ready for the outdoor season. Ideally, it should already have been dry and warm for several days. The ideal temperatures are between +15 and +25 degrees Celsius. It should also be dry at night and preferably already warmer than +8 degrees Celsius. The colder it is, the more poorly the oil cures.
Light & atmospheric oxygen also contribute to the oil curing thoroughly and quickly. So anyone who thinks they can outsmart the weather by moving the coating work into a dark basement or garage should not forget about daylight & airing the room.
Once temperatures start to rise and there is not a rain cloud in the sky, you can get started. The wood should be thoroughly dry. This applies particularly to garden furniture that has overwintered outdoors, as well as to new, untreated wood. Its residual moisture may still be too high.
In general, coating should never be applied to wet wood. Working in blazing sunshine or on surfaces heated by the sun is also not ideal. The oil would dry too quickly and would no longer be able to penetrate the wood pores.
Clean outdoor wood before oiling
If the wood has already been oiled, re-oiling without sanding is easily possible. The wood only needs to be thoroughly cleaned beforehand. Loose dirt can be brushed off with a soft brush, while green soap or our OLI-NATURA Outdoor Cleaner helps with heavier soiling. Simply dilute some cleaner with water, brush it in, leave it to work briefly and rinse with plenty of clean water. Always work in the direction of the grain and allow the wood to dry thoroughly. Wood fibres that have raised due to the water can be removed with sandpaper.
Important: Old coatings such as lacquer or a thick-layer stain must be completely sanded off before oiling.
Oil garden furniture & co.
As soon as the wood surface is clean and absolutely dry, apply the »OLI-NATURA Yacht & Teak Oil« thinly to all sides using a flat brush or a cloth. Then allow it to penetrate briefly and polish in the excess oil with a cotton cloth or an oil-absorbing cloth and remove the excess. After drying overnight, a second coat can be applied.
How often should it be maintained?
The maintenance required depends largely on the type of wood & its location. Depending on how strongly the wood is exposed to the wind, the sun or the rain, it should be re-oiled once or twice a year.
Particularly hardwoods such as teak have a high oil content and need little protection. Always apply only a thin layer of oil so that it can penetrate well and the wood does not become oversaturated!
TIP: Signs of a diminishing oil content include a rough-feeling surface, fading colour depth and the wood slowly turning grey. It should then be re-oiled.
