Garden furniture and terraces made of teak, bangkirai or robinia are beautiful. To keep them that way, proper surface protection is important. The maintenance required depends largely on the type of wood. Hardwood such as teak is particularly durable by nature and requires little protection. However, exposure to the weather will cause it to turn silvery gray over time. Not everyone likes this natural patina. Those who want to prevent this discoloration can regularly refresh the wood’s natural color with the hardwood oil »OLI-NATURA Yacht & Teak Oil«.

The hardwood oil »OLI-NATURA Yacht & Teak Oil« in »Natural« and »Teak« protects wood from sun, rain and graying. Equipped with UV protection, it gives garden furniture, terraces, pool surrounds and yacht decks made of hardwood, exotic wood and pressure-treated softwood a weather-resistant surface.
The naturally drying oil based on natural oils does not form a surface film, but instead provides an open-pored impregnation. It does not crack, flake or peel off, but penetrates deep into the wood and fills the capillaries. This ensures very good water resistance. The wood remains vapor-permeable and can release absorbed humidity again.
With the colorless »Natural« version, the wood grain and color are particularly beautifully emphasized. The lightly pigmented »Teak« version adds transparent color to the wood. The pigments preserve the wood’s structural appearance and give the surface a natural color. At the same time, the UV-stable color pigments help counteract the wood’s natural color change for as long as possible. Both oils are free from biocidal active ingredients and can therefore also be used on wood indoors.
Before application: prepare the wood
Before applying the wood oil , even well-preserved and well-maintained garden furniture and terraces must be cleaned: Thoroughly remove all dirt with »OLI-NATURA Outdoor Wood Cleaner« or a mild wood soap and a brush, then rinse with plenty of clean water. Always work in the direction of the grain and allow the wood to dry thoroughly. For an optimal result, sand the wood fibers that have raised due to moisture until they are flush and the surface feels smooth again. Now sweep away all sanding dust and wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth. If you are oiling your garden furniture outdoors, please do not do so in blazing sun or damp weather.
Apply with a flat brush or cloth
As soon as the surface is dry, apply a thin coat of oil to all sides with a flat brush or cloth. Always work in the direction of the grain and, after a short absorption time, remove the excess oil with a dry, lint-free cotton cloth. For highly absorbent wood or very weathered surfaces, a second coat of oil may be advisable after drying overnight. Depending on the temperature, it will be dust-dry after 1–2 hours and fully cured after 2–3 days.
Re-oil once or twice a year - no sanding required
Oiled wood also turns gray over time. Anyone wishing to avoid this discoloration for visual reasons must regularly refresh the wood’s natural color. Depending on how strongly the wood is exposed to wind, sun or rain, you should re-oil the wood once or twice a year. This renews the protective effect and fills the wood pores with oil again. A good indication that the wood needs maintenance is when its water resistance decreases, the surface feels rougher and the wood gradually turns gray. Re-oiling is easily possible without sanding.
Caution: risk of spontaneous combustion!
Particular attention should be paid to oil-soaked rags and cloths, which can spontaneously combust due to heat buildup. Naturally drying oils cure by absorbing oxygen from the air. This generates heat, which is normally released into the surroundings and is completely harmless. However, in oil-soaked and crumpled rags, cloths, pads or sponges, the heat cannot escape, so they may spontaneously combust in unfavorable circumstances. Oily cloths or rags should therefore never be left unattended; instead, soak them with water, hang them outdoors and allow them to dry. Treated this way, they can be disposed of safely once dry. Brushes, on the other hand, can be cleaned with mineral spirits after application and then reused.
