Strangers become friends
The reputation of famous wood and epoxy resin artist Roger Jungo brought us to Switzerland in 2022. What began as a simple introduction quickly developed into a genuine friendship. We hit it off right away, and it felt as though we’d known each other forever. A lot has happened since then: Roger is not only our independent sales agent in Switzerland, but also the face of our Blacklabel collection.
A master of his craft
Roger has made a name for himself with Jungo Design through his impressive XXL wood and epoxy resin tables - both in Switzerland and around the world. Leading epoxy resin manufacturers hire him as a course instructor, and he has already trained hundreds of people in epoxy resin casting over weekends. This led to the creation of the Jungo Design Academy.
A story of courage and love
But before he discovered his passion for wood, Roger went through some difficult times. He was homeless and addicted to drugs, wandering the streets of Freiburg and Bern for many years and getting by with jobs in stage construction and specialist civil engineering. Thanks to his great love, Stefanie, he eventually found his true passion: designing and making epoxy resin tables. That’s how Jungo Design came about. Today, they are not only married and parents of two children, but also a successful team in their craft.
Every piece of wood tells a story
His tables are more than just pieces of furniture; they tell vivid stories, crafted from carefully selected woods from around the world that have seen and experienced a lot. Once, he was particularly moved by old oak wood from France, riddled with bullet holes from the battles of World War II. “These bullet holes are witnesses to history,” he explains. “I deliberately leave these traces of history visible to preserve the memory.” Sometimes, up to 15 tables are made at once in his workshop, each one unique - each table 100% Jungo,” says Roger proudly.
The art of perfection
Working with wood and resin is no easy task. “It took years of experimentation and investments of time and money to perfect the technique. Working with epoxy resin is an art - humidity and temperature have to be just right, and there’s only one specific moment when it can be processed perfectly,” Roger explains.
The best materials for unique works of art
For his tables, Roger chooses only the finest woods: 800- to 1,200-year-old olive wood, burr elm, smoked sweet chestnut, and walnut. The quality of the surface finish must do justice to the wood. “I found OLI-NATURA oils & waxes on Instagram. I immediately contacted the manufacturer and invited them to visit me. After discussing things, they introduced me to the perfect product: OLI NATURA Worktop-Oil, a solvent-free full-solid oil based on tung oil. It lets the wood breathe, brings out the wood’s grain and color, and doesn’t obscure the epoxy resin. It’s my absolute favorite,” explains Roger.
More than an artist
With his many tattoos and casual clothes, Roger embodies the image of a typical artist. But he is more than that. Alongside his work as a designer, he is also an entrepreneur, teacher, and mentor who enjoys sharing his knowledge in workshops. “It’s not just about designing for me. I want to share my passion for craftsmanship and inspire others,” he says. “But first and foremost, I’m Stefanie’s husband and the father of two wonderful children.”
