Here you will find helpful answers to frequently asked questions:
-
What is the difference between an initial treatment and a care treatment?
The initial treatment refers to the first oiling of raw, untreated or completely sanded wood, whereby the oil consumption is generally somewhat higher. The care treatment, also known as follow-up treatment, is used for re-oiling already impregnated wooden surfaces. The wood pores are filled again to reinforce protection and refresh the appearance of the wood. During the care treatment, the oil is used more sparingly to prevent oversaturation of the wood.
-
Can I apply the oil to an unknown old coating?
No, if the wood was previously waxed or lacquered, these layers must be completely removed. The oil requires an open-pore system to penetrate the wood effectively.
-
Can I use the teak pigmentation for other types of outdoor wood?
Yes, the teak pigmentation is subtle and does not turn other types of wood into a teak colour. However, the slight pigment content provides improved UV protection.
-
When is the best time to oil outdoor wood?
It is best to oil outdoor wood at mild temperatures of 15-25°C. Do not oil in bright sunlight, extreme heat, cold or wet conditions, so as not to impair the wood's optimal absorption of the oil:
-
How often should I re-oil?
To prevent visual greying, it is recommended to re-oil the wood once or twice a year, depending on the weather conditions.
-
Can the coverage of the oil vary?
Yes, the amount of oil required may vary depending on the type of wood and its absorbency. Rougher and weathered surfaces generally require more oil than smooth or less weathered surfaces. Typically, consumption is between 40 and 80 g/m² per coat.
-
How can I prevent stickiness after oiling?
Remove excess oil that has not been absorbed by the wood after a short penetration time using an oil-absorbent cloth or a discarded cotton cloth.
-
Can I re-oil without sanding?
Yes, for untreated or already oiled wood, you can generally apply the oil directly without sanding beforehand.
-
How do I clean brushes?
Clean brushes immediately after use with oil thinner or a special brush cleaner.
-
Are oil-soaked cloths liable to self-ignite?
Yes, the oil is a drying oil that reacts with oxygen in the air and generates heat. In tightly crumpled cloths, this can lead to heat accumulation and spontaneous combustion. It is recommended to dry oil-soaked cloths outdoors, dampened and spread out.
